How the estimate is calculated
This calculator counts the words in the text you enter and divides that total by the reading speed you select. Reading speed is measured in words per minute, so a 1,200-word article at 240 words per minute produces an estimated reading time of five minutes.
Speaking time is normally longer because people usually speak more slowly than they silently read. The speaking estimate on this page uses a separate rate so a script can be planned differently from an article.
What changes real reading time
Actual reading speed varies with subject difficulty, sentence length, vocabulary, formatting, familiarity, distractions, and whether someone is skimming or studying closely. Code blocks, tables, instructions, legal language, and technical material often take longer than ordinary prose with the same word count.
Useful ways to apply the estimate
Writers can use reading time to compare drafts, plan newsletters, prepare lessons, estimate presentation length, and decide whether a page needs clearer sections. Treat the number as an editorial planning aid rather than a promise that every visitor will finish at the same speed.
