What a meta description is for
A meta description summarizes a page for search engines and other systems that read page metadata. Google may use the supplied description in a search result when it matches the query and page well, but Google can also create a different snippet from visible content.
What to review before publishing
The description should accurately represent the page, use natural language, and help a searcher understand what they will find after clicking. Avoid lists of repeated keywords, vague marketing claims, descriptions copied across unrelated pages, and wording that promises content the page does not actually provide.
Length is a review signal, not a fixed Google limit
Search-result snippets vary by query, device, language, and available display space. Character counts can help editors spot descriptions that are extremely short or unnecessarily long, but there is no single guaranteed display length. Prioritize accuracy, relevance, and clarity over forcing every page to the same character total.
Relationship to page content
A strong description cannot compensate for a weak page. The page title, headings, visible content, internal links, structured data, and overall usefulness still need to support the same purpose described in the metadata.
