What a URL slug is
A slug is the readable part of a URL path that identifies a page. Clear slugs usually use lowercase words separated by hyphens and avoid punctuation, unnecessary tracking terms, or strings that are difficult for people to recognize.
Example
A page titled “How to Clean Text Before Importing It” can use the slug how-to-clean-text-before-importing. That keeps the address descriptive while removing punctuation and words that do not add much meaning.
Publishing considerations
Choose a stable slug before an important page is widely linked or indexed. Changing a published URL without a redirect can break bookmarks, backlinks, analytics history, and internal links. If a slug must change, preserve the old address with an appropriate redirect and update internal references to the new canonical URL.
SEO perspective
A readable slug can help users understand what a link is about, but it does not substitute for useful page content, clear titles, crawlable navigation, or accurate metadata. Avoid repeatedly changing URLs just to add keywords.
